How To Measure For Garage Doors

If you are ordering a new garage door, it is important to measure the existing opening properly. Sure, measuring is quick, but accuracy matters.

Step-by-Step Measuring Overview

Measuring Garage Door Width

Step 1: Measuring The Width Of The Garage Door

Measure the garage opening, from the left side to the right. Take three measurements from the top, middle and bottom of the opening. We will use the smallest measurement.

Measuring Garage Door Height

Step 2: Measuring the Height of The Garage Door

For height, measure from the floor to the lintel, from the floor to the frame, and from the lintel to the frame. Take three measurements across the opening. Once again, we will use the smallest measurement.

Measuring your garage door opening accurately ensures the perfect fit. Don’t worry about calculating tolerances or fitting gaps, as we’ll handle all the technical adjustments for you. Just provide the exact aperture width and height, and we’ll take care of the rest!

What If I Need A Garage Door Frame?

If you have an existing garage door frame, that is fine. Provide us with tight measurements for the width and height, measuring from the frame.

Replacing an Up-And-Over Garage Door?

When replacing an up-and-over garage door, you may need to get a new frame from us with your garage doors, as up-and-over frames are not always suitable for side-hung garage doors due to not always having the correct rebates

If you’re replacing an up-and-over garage door, you may find that you have a panelled section above the garage door. Often, this can be removed to create a taller opening for your wooden garage door, giving you a bit of extra height to store taller items and vehicles.

Our Garage Door Measurement Tips

Use A Tape Measure

Always use a reliable tape measure to ensure accurate measurements. This is better than using a ruler or yardstick, which are typically too short to measure the full width or height of the garage door opening. A steel tape measure is often more accurate than a flexible tape measure, too.

Measure Twice

Always measure twice! Double-checking your measurements will ensure accuracy. After all, even a small error can result in a door that does not fit properly, causing problems with opening and closing.

Measure At Multiple Points

When measuring, always measure from multiple different points. This ensures consistent measurement, where you can identify irregularities and account for them in the final door size.

Fully Bespoke Service

We manufacture all our garage doors to order; therefore, we can make fully bespoke doors. Please use the bespoke sizing option when ordering from us to ensure that your garage doors are manufactured to fit perfectly.
