How To Measure For A Driveway Gate

If you’re looking to install a new wooden driveway gate, it’s essential to make sure that you measure correctly to ensure that your new gates fit correctly.

It may seem like a fairly simple process; however, there are a few different measurements you need to take, and due to the bespoke nature of our gates, it’s important to get your measurements right from the start to avoid any confusion and further problems.

The Width Of Your Gates

First things first, you want to calculate the gate width. Take three measurements between any existing pillars or posts, across the top, middle and bottom.

Which Width Should I Use?

Always use the smallest (narrowest) measurement. This means that the gate will fit without any binding. If there is a significant difference between your measurements, this may be a sign that you need to adjust or reset your posts.

What About If I Am Installing New Posts?

If you are installing new posts, we recommend that you install the posts first, set them securely, and then take the measurements for your gates between the two finished posts.

Can I Use My Existing Brick Pillars?

Yes, you can often hand gates from your existing brick or stone pillars, as long as they are structurally sound. However, heavy gates can put stress on masonry.

Before installing your gates, check the pillars for cracks, damage or any visible defects. Timber posts attached to the face of the brickwork may be a better way to create a secure, flat surface for the hinges. Often, this provides a stronger, more adjustable point in which to mount your hardware rather than going directly into the masonry.

The Height Of Your Gates

Gate Height Measurements
The height of your gates is the distance from the bottom of the gate to the top of the horns. If you are ordering a driveway gate with a curved top, this is measured from the side stiles, rising in the centre.

How Much Ground Clearance Should I Allow For?

Allow 50mm (2 inches) from the ground to ensure your gate can swing freely without dragging on the ground.

What If My Driveway Is Sloped?

If your driveway is sloped across the gate opening or slopes away in the direction in which you want the gate to open, this must be factored into your height and clearance calculations.

If the slope is significant, you may need to factor in a greater ground clearance. In this situation, your best bet is to get in touch with our team, who’ll be able to find the best option.

Should I Confirm My Measurements Before Ordering?

Yes, always measure twice, or even three times!

Do I Need To Consider Where My Gate Will Swing Open?

Yes, you must decide whether your gate will swing inward towards your property or outward. Ensure there is ample clear space for the gate to open fully, and consider that planning regulations often restrict outward-swinging gates onto a public highway.

Following the above guide will allow you to work out all of the correct measurements for your new driveway gate. However, if you’re still stuck with which size is the right choice, please contact a member of our team, and we’ll be more than happy to help.
